2000 Aztec Bowl to Be Played on Yucatan Peninsula |
| WACO, TX - For the fourth consecutive year, the AFCA will send a Division III all-star
team to Mexico to battle a team of that county's top college players in the 2000 Aztec Bowl on Saturday December
16. This year's game will be played at Alvarado Stadium in the City of Merida (population 700,000), the capital
of the State of Yucatan that is located on the Yucatan Peninsula. The USA Division III All Stars have won all three games. Led by former Central College (Iowa) Head Coach Ron Schipper, the initial recipient of the Jim Butterfield Award that is sponsored by USA FOOTBALL.COM, the USA squad defeated Mexico 44-13 in last year's game that was played in Mexico City. In the inaugural game played in Toluca, Mexicao in 1997, the USA Division III All Stars edged Mexico 42-41 and followed with a 40-13 rout in 1998 in Monterrey. "The Aztec Bowl is a special treat for the players who are fortunate enough to play in it. Not only does it provide them an opportunity to continue to play a game they love to play, but the cultural experience has proven to be very worthwhile," said Schipper. "This game also gives our players a chance to make some new friends within the Division III football community. It's very rewarding each year to watch 40 players from 40 different schools across the country come together as a team in a week's time." Schipper, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame earlier this month, will return to coach the U.S. team this year and will have a staff made up of five former Division III head coaches. As in the first three years, this year's 40-man USA roster will consist of seniors from the AFCA Division III Coaches' All-America Team, as well as selected Division III seniors from around the country. |
